Extra work for the End of Year show

 

After the show at the shop in Canterbury finished, and the show was to be moved back to Canterbury College to be even bigger and better, located in the Student Union area of the college. We each got the opportunity to pick two more of our pieces of work from over the past two years to print for the show, as there would be more room to showcase more of students work. I decided on my Borough Market poster from the Advertising project, and my David Carson inspired magazine cover from the Magazine project.

   

Looking after the End of Year show at the Shop

After the launch evening on Friday 7th June 2013, where the exhibition at the shop was open first as the "private view" to friends and family of those exhibiting work, the shop was then open to the public from the Saturday the 8th onwards.

The shop was planned to stay open from that weekend, through to the following weekend, to then be taken down on the Monday the 17th June, and bought back to College.

The shop was to be open everyday from 10am - 5pm, and as it was open all day to the public, the shop had to be looked after from open to close. A rota was arranged by a couple of the students to produce a timetable for when each of the students would be able to look after the shop, weather it be weekdays or weekends, working around when everyone could be avaliable, as everybody had to look after the shop at least once at one point, and in pairs, usally for an hour each at a time. Students were taught how to open and close the shop, if roted for first thing in the morning, or the last slot in the afternoon. We was also taught how to work the electric box in the shop.

My timeslot on the rota was for the first day it was open to the public in Canterbury, Saturday the 8th June, 3pm - 5pm. as I was free to come in that weekend. I was partnered up in twos, with Holly.

We both arrived at the shop for 3, where it was already being invidulated by a couple of other students for the previous few hours, where we took over. They were also roted to 5pm, so we took turns in pairs   at the different jobs there was for us to do whilst looking after the shop. One being staying inside the shop to look after it, the other to be outside holding the Off The Grid sign pointing it towards the exhibition.

Whilst looking after the shop, we had to make sure someone was in there at all times incase of a visit to the exhibiton. When people came in, we had to make sure we greeted them, as well as say goodbye when they left. Just generally be polite and welcoming. As well as answer any questions they had, about the work or the exhibition in general.

Many people came in questioning what posters meant, or what they were for, or where the other Art & Design exhibitions were, as well as asking us about the course. We had a fair few people come in whilst we was looking after the shop for the two hours, all who gave great feedback of the exhibition and how it looked.

Whilst being outside with the sign, we went out onto the Canterbury high street, to hold the sign up to passers buy with hope of grabbing some attention of those who walked by to come to our exhibition. We thought the highstreet would be a busy area to get people in.

This is my piece I chose to put up in the end of year show, as my A1. It is my Mexican Skull illustration I did in the first year for the Ethnic Art project.

End of Year Show at the Shop

These are some photographs I have taken of the show, that was held at the shop in Canterbury for just over a week for people to come an exhibit, with the two groups of Graphic Designs work, with one A1 piece each.

 This is the poster to promote ''Bridging The Gap'', the Art & Design exhibition for Art, Graphic Design and Photography students.

This is the shop front of where our exhibition was held, with signage to promote whats inside, aka our Graphic Design exhibition.

This is the board which people who entered the shop was first faced with, it introduces what the exhibition is all about, and shows all the names of the students involved.

This is a table which was placed within the show, which contained many flyers for people to take away promoting the Art and Design exhibition and giving all information about it, and its where abouts over the next few weeks. There was also a few badges across the table also produced by a few students for the show, which were made espeically for Off The Grid. There was also a sample of the end of year brochure, and a note pad for people to sign with their thoughts of the exhibition.

My twopage spread in the end of year brochure

We all had to provide information for the End Of Year brochure, where each student across the two Graphic Design groups got a two page spread of ''about me'' and a gallery of work. The first page was the information page included our thoughts about the time on the course over the two years, and our next destination as well as some contact details of our e mails and blog address which showcases even more our work. We had to have a photograph taken each of our selfs to go along with the written info. The second page was the work, we each had to choose 3 pieces of our best or favourite work from across the two years.

I chose three portrait pieces, which included my Psychedelic Coca Cola poster from the Retro project, my magazine cover from the Magazine project, and my Borough Market poster from the advertsing project.

Launch Party for the End of Year Show

Friday the 7th of June 2013 we had our private view for the launch of the end of year show, which we invited friends and family too. The show begun at Canterbury College at 5.30pm, for the Art & Design level 2 and 3 students, before moving into Canterbury for the Level 3 Art and Level 3 Graphic Design at 6.30pm. The Level 3 Photography students work was shown at the Marlow theatre at 7.30pm.

Our slot was the Level 3 Graphic Design showing at 6.30pm, and I bought along my mum, dad and brother. The shop we hired and redecorated into a gallery was packed out with people coming to view our gallery of work. There were students with set jobs, such as giving out drinks at the bar to the guests. The place was full of lively people showing off their work to their family, and people admiring the pieces we'd put up. The night turned out very well.
